🕒 Why does India have only one time zone?
India stretches nearly 30° of longitude, which means the sun rises almost 2 hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh than in Gujarat. Yet the entire country follows Indian Standard Time (IST = UTC+5:30).
Why?
✅ National Unity: One time across the country avoids confusion in governance, communication, and administration.
✅ Railways & Transport: A single time zone simplifies scheduling for trains, flights, and logistics.
✅ Business & Coordination: Government offices, schools, banks, and businesses can operate under one standard time.
✅ Historical Legacy: IST was adopted based on the longitude of 82.5°E passing near Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, and continues today.
However, critics argue that northeastern states lose daylight in the evening, leading to higher energy use and reduced productivity. That’s why there are periodic debates about introducing a separate time zone for Northeast India.
🌅 One nation, one clock—but not one sunrise.
