Ostriches consume stones because they lack teeth, requiring a method to grind their food. These stones, known as gastroliths, are stored in the gizzard, a specialized muscular part of their stomach. When an ostrich swallows food, the gizzard contracts, using the stones to crush and break down tough plant material, facilitating easier digestion and enabling them to extract more nutrients. An adult ostrich can carry over a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of stones in its gizzard at any given time.
