Dams bring benefits, but they also transform rivers in ways we often don’t see.
Dams provide electricity, irrigation, drinking water, and flood control. At the same time, they alter natural river flow, trap sediments, change habitats, and affect ecosystems downstream.
A river below a dam is often very different from the river that once flowed freely. Less sediment reaches floodplains and deltas, fish migration can be disrupted, and natural flooding cycles may change.
The challenge is not whether dams are good or bad. The real question is how we can balance human needs with the long term health of river ecosystems.
💧 Rivers are more than water channels. They are living systems that connect landscapes, ecosystems, and people.
