Africa is literally tearing in two along the East African Rift Valley! 🌍
Here, the African Plate is slowly splitting into the Nubian Plate (west) and the Somali Plate (east) as the crust is stretched and thinned. ��As the plates pull apart:Long cracks and normal faults create deep rift valleys in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. ��Magma rises from the mantle, feeding active volcanoes and hot springs along the rift. ��Over tens of millions of years, the rift can flood with seawater and form a brand new ocean, separating eastern Africa from the rest of the continent. ��This is how continents break and new oceans are born – in real time, in Africa. 🌋🌊
