DU’s move to allow direct PhD entry after a 4 year UG degree opens a serious academic debate. The question is not simply whether students can save a year, but whether they will enter doctoral research with enough research rigour, methodological training, subject depth and academic maturity. A Master’s is not merely an additional degree; for many disciplines, it is the stage where advanced theory, specialised knowledge and research methodology are developed. So before celebrating or criticising the move, we need to ask a harder question: Are we reducing the duration of higher education, or genuinely transforming the pathway to research?
